Lelouch Lamperouge （鲁鲁修 兰佩鲁奇）The title character and protagonist of the show, Lelouch Lamperouge is a seemingly ordinary 17-year-old student at Ashford Academy. In reality, he is Lelouch vi Britannia, the exiled son of the Emperor of Britannia and the late Empress Marianne, forced to flee to Japan after his mother's assassination. When he gets caught up in a battle between the military and Japanese rebels, he gains the power of Geass, allowing him to force others to obey his orders without question, and begins a quest to utilize this power to destroy Britannia under another identity known as Zero. Suzaku Kururugi（枢木朱雀） Lelouch's childhood friend and son of Japan's last prime minister, Genbu Kururugi. Suzaku is in the service of the Britannia Army as a soldier and chosen to test an experimental new model of Knightmare Frame, the Lancelot. Throughout the series, Suzaku shows a belief that achieving results by wrong or illegal methods is meaningless, setting up a rivalry with Zero. C.C. A mysterious green-haired girl who establishes a contract with Lelouch on the condition that he grant her one wish, passively overseeing Lelouch's missions and occasionally helping them succeed to ensure he does not die. Nunnally Lamperouge （娜娜莉 兰佩鲁奇）Lelouch's younger innocent sister, wheelchair-bound and blind from her mother's brutal assassination. Lelouch originally got involved with the war because he wanted to create a pleasant world for Nunnally. Kallen Stadtfeld （卡莲 斯坦福德）A Britannian-Japanese who believes herself to be a Japanese person at heart and prefers her birth name, Kallen Kouzuki, over that of her father's prestigious family. She maintains the image of a frail, outstanding student at Ashford Academy, all the while being a member of the Japanese resistance movement and one of Zero's most devoted followers. Rolo Lamperouge（罗罗 兰佩鲁奇）Rolo Lamperouge is introduced in the second season as an assassin posing as Lelouch's brother, placed there to observe Lelouch following his memory rewrite at the end of the first season. Rolo pilots the Vincent Prototype, and possesses a Geass power in his right eye that allows him to temporarily freeze the subjective experience of time for all persons within a given range. Whenever Rolo uses this power, his heart stops until the effect ends. He is manipulated by Lelouch into supporting the Black Knights and seems to become dependent on Lelouch over time, treasuring a locket given to him by Lelouch on his birthday and always referring to him as "brother".Shirley Fenette（夏莉）Shirley Fenette (シャーリー・フェネット, Shārī Fenetto?) is a typical, all-around nice girl who is exceptionally friendly and loves her friends. She is a member of the swimming club. She admits to being infatuated with Lelouch since his enrollment on campus, but finds it extremely hard to get his attention. She has a habit of jumping to conclusions before people can explain things to her, particularly where Lelouch is concerned. Shirley was awarded 19th place in the 29th Anime Grand Prix for Favorite Female Character. Her name and character design are direct references to Anne Shirley (アン・シャーリー, An Shārī?), a character from Nippon Animation's popular anime series Anne of Green Gables (赤毛のアン, Akage no An?).Shirley has a major role in the middle of the first season. After the Black Knights, led by Lelouch's alter ego Zero, indirectly cause the death of her father during the Battle of Narita, Villetta Nu suggests that Lelouch may be involved with the Black Knights. The distressed Shirley follows him and discovers that he is in fact Zero, but shoots Villetta to protect his secret. She tries to write a letter about her feelings on the situation to Lelouch, only to throw it aside. Mao then uses his mind-reading Geass to manipulate her into killing Lelouch for him, but she cannot bring herself to do so. To alleviate her suffering, Lelouch uses his Geass to erase Shirley's memories of him. Lelouch expresses regret for having to do so, and even quietly suggests that he might have loved her. Shirley rediscovers her letter near the end of the first season, but cannot confront Lelouch about it because of the rebellion that takes place.In the second season, Shirley's memories, along with the rest of Ashford's Student Council, have been rewritten by the Emperor, erasing her memories of Zero's identity for the second time. Her affection for Lelouch has returned over the intermediate year. Her memories are restored by Jeremiah Gottwald's Geass Canceller. After coming to terms with it, she comes to understand Lelouch's motivations and forgives him after realizing that he is alone in his quest. She resolves to support him as the one true thing in his life, but before she can find him, she runs into Rolo. She attempts to reason with Rolo so he can help her join Lelouch, but when Shirley mentions that she wants to help Lelouch reunite with Nunnally, Rolo snaps and mortally wounds her. She confesses her feelings to Lelouch when he finds her and dies in his arms despite Lelouch's desperate attempts to command her to live. Her death is ruled as a suicide. Lelouch then blames the power of the Geass in causing her death and orders the destruction of the Geass Order.Sayoko Shinozaki（咲世子）Sayoko Shinozaki (篠崎 咲世子, Shinozaki Sayoko?) is a kindhearted Japanese woman who serves as a maid to the Lamperouge siblings in their residence. She was originally Milly Ashford's personal maid, but was reassigned to Lelouch and Nunnally when they were placed under the Ashfords' care. Her relatively benign appearance contrasts with her position as the 37th successor of the Shinozaki School (篠崎流, Shinozaki Ryuu?) of martial arts. She is a highly skilled martial artist, carrying smoke bombs and a number of kunai strapped to her thighs, and has matching athletic talents. She is referred to as a supermaid (スーパーメイド, sūpāmeido?) on her official profile.[3] The DVD releases for the series occasionally promote a segment called "Sayoko's Diary," which depicts her humorously slanted view of daily life at the Ashford Academy.Sayoko assists in taking care of Nunnally whenever Lelouch is not around. She is later employed by Diethard Reid as a spy for the Black Knights, and escapes capture during the Black Rebellion by leaving for the Chinese Federation with Diethard and several other members. Lelouch reveals his secret identity to her in the second season, and she poses as his double at Ashford while he is away. Though she is able to play the part somewhat convincingly, her aforementioned slanted viewpoint of his daily life leads her to believe that he is a womanizer, and she portrays him as such, to his dismay. Furthermore, she also openly displays her athletic prowess during one of Milly's festivals, another contrast with the physically unfit Lelouch. During the second battle of Tokyo, she leads a mission with Rolo to secure Nunnally, only to be apparently caught in the blast radius of the F.L.E.I.J.A. bomb. However, both she and Nunnally manage to escape in ship before it ends up with Schneizel. Sayoko escapes and returns to Lelouch to warn him about Schneizel's plan, wounded. Jeremiah comments on her seemingly odd choice of loyalties (following a Britannian despite being Japanese), and remarks that she, like himself, seems to follow the path of chivalry. When the Avalon is boarded by the Black Knights, Lelouch had her release the U.F.N. hostages under the guise of betraying him as his final order to her. She is later imprisoned alongside Rakshata, Nina, and Cécile but is later set free.Kaname Ohgi（扇）Kaname Ohgi (扇 要, Ōgi Kaname?) is the leader of the original resistance cell. He took over leadership following the death of Kallen's older brother, Naoto Kouzuki (红月ナオト, Kōzuki Naoto?), leaving his teaching job to do so. He is a somewhat reserved individual who lacks self-confidence, often questioning his ability to lead. However, he is also fairly perceptive, recognizing Zero's intentions to a degree and even deducing some of the things he keeps secret from the organization. Kaname turns over leadership of his resistance cell to Zero after Zero proves himself the more competent and effective commander. When Zero reorganizes the Black Knights, he appoints Ohgi as deputy commander.Following a battle in which the Japan Liberation Front is all but wiped out, Ohgi finds Villetta Nu left for dead at a ship dock. He nurses her back to health, and lets her live with him when she cannot remember who she is. Though he knows she has seen Zero's face (Villetta having said so when he recovered her), he cannot bring himself to kill her or use Refrain to recover her memories. Over time, he falls in love with her. During the Black Rebellion, Ohgi is shot by Villetta, who has regained her memories.Despite being captured in the Black Rebellion, Ohgi maintains his faith in Zero, knowing that Zero alone can liberate Japan. During the opening ceremony for the second Special Administration Region in Japan, he prevents Villetta from being shot. She suspects it is him, but he doesn't confirm her suspicions and bids her farewell. Later, Villetta arranges a meeting with Ohgi, intending to kill him to erase her links to the Elevens. Ohgi comes knowing full well what she intends to do, and confesses his love for her. Villetta is captured during an altercation with Sayoko and held hostage by Diethard to ensure Ohgi's loyalty, but is set free shortly after the second battle of Tokyo is cut short. She and Ohgi help convince the leaders of the Black Knights that Schneizel's claims are valid. However, Ohgi adamantly insists that Japan be freed if they betray Zero, feeling that he couldn't forgive himself if any less came of it. Diethard notes that it is in Ohgi's nature to protect, not lead, and considers his new leadership role a "miscast." During the battle against Lelouch, he has Villetta stay on Horai Island, telling her that he was the first to acknowledge Lelouch and that he doesn't want to get new lives involved, as she is pregnant. He marries Villetta at the end of the series, and is elected Prime Minister of Japan. Arthur(阿瑟）Arthur (アーサー, Āsā?) is a stray cat which Third Princess Euphemia befriends after she arrives in Area 11. Arthur is later chased throughout the school grounds by the entire student body after wandering into the Lamperouge residence and escaping with Lelouch's Zero mask stuck on his head. The student council adopts him and builds a cat house in the council room. A running gag in the series involves Arthur constantly biting Suzaku in various places, yet being very affectionate to virtually everyone else he meets. Despite what appears to be a one-sided relationship, Arthur did save Suzaku from being shot by biting the hand of Tamaki right as he was about to shoot Suzaku in the final episode of the first season. Suzaku takes the feline along with him to Britannia, where Arthur takes a liking to Knight of the Round Anya Alstreim. When Suzaku returns to Ashford Academy in the second season, he brings Arthur back with him. In the series finale, Arthur is shown watching over Suzaku's grave in the middle of the night. Arthur is last seen in Ohgi and Villetta's wedding picture on Anya's head.Milly Ashford（米莉 阿修佛德）Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara (Japanese), Julie Ann Taylor (English) Milly Ashford (ミレイ・アッシュフォード, Mirei Asshufōdo?) is the granddaughter of the school superintendent, Ruben K. Ashford, and president of the Student Council. Milly enjoys teasing Shirley and is eager to discover Lelouch's weaknesses — so much as to rally the entire school into chasing after Arthur when she suspects the cat to hold something precious to him. She is secretly in love with Lelouch, but realizes the need to restore her family's status by marrying a noble.Milly is aware of Lelouch's identity as a former prince of Britannia, her family having supported Empress Marianne. In the second picture drama special included on the DVD release, her grandfather and Nina's grandfather are said to have worked on the Io and Ganymede Knightmare Frames together. Marianne's assassination led to the family's nobility status being stripped. The Ashfords arrange for Milly to marry Earl Lloyd Asplund to restore it. After the events of the first season, Milly remains a student on campus because she failed her examinations, although it is noted that she did so on purpose to remain on campus with her friends. She eventually earns enough credits to graduate. After graduating, she becomes a reporter on the local TV news and breaks off her engagement with Lloyd in an effort to become more true to herself. Milly is last seen in Ohgi and Villetta's wedding picture.Rivalz Cardemonde（利巴鲁）Voiced by: Noriaki Sugiyama (Japanese), Brian Beacock (English) Rivalz Cardemonde (リヴァル・カルデモンド, Rivaru Karudemondo?) is one of Lelouch's friends, usually driving Lelouch around on his motorbike as an ante for their bets on chess games. He has a part-time job as a bartender/waiter and carries unrequited love for Milly Ashford, especially when it is announced that she is going through a marriage interview. Shown in-series and in the DVD-exclusive bonus material, Rivalz forms a fast friendship with Suzaku after he joins the student council at Lelouch's request. Rivalz's real surname is not Cardemonde, which is his mother's maiden name that he uses after his parents became estranged. He was born and partially raised in California. Rivalz is last seen in Ohgi and Villetta's wedding picture. [1]Nina Einstein（妮娜 爱因斯坦）Voiced by: Saeko Chiba (Japanese), Kim Mai Guest (English) Nina Einstein (ニーナ・アインシュタイン, Nīna Ainshutain?) is introduced as a bookish member of the student council at Ashford Academy. Nina demonstrates an acute xenophobic reaction to Elevens and is initially intimidated by Suzaku when he arrives in the school. She develops an obsession with Third Princess Euphemia after the latter helps her during a traumatizing hostage incident at the Lake Kawaguchi Convention Center Hotel.Lloyd Asplund is interested in Nina's personal research regarding the possibility of using Uranium-235 as a fuel, even providing her with some sakuradite to further her research. Following Euphemia's death, Nina becomes emotionally and mentally unstable. In a misguided attempt to kill Zero and avenge the princess, she arms the Ashford's Ganymede Knightmare Frame with a prototype nuclear reactor and intends to detonate it and take out all of Tokyo, but it fails to explode.Nina is eventually recruited by Second Prince Schneizel as chief of his "In Vogue" research team headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Schneizel seems to keep her stable by reminding her of how Euphemia would act, though her bitterness towards Zero is not forgotten.[2] Under him, she eventually creates a working bomb. The bomb, codenamed F.L.E.I.J.A. (Field Limitary Effective Implosion Armament, pronounced "Freya"), vaporizes everything within a specific radius. The one used on Tokyo obliterates everything within eight kilometers, while another used on the Britannian capital of Pendragon destroys everything within 100 kilometers, accomplished by removing the limiter on the device. Though she is initially thrilled to see her revenge on Zero coming true, Nina is actually shocked and devastated by the destruction caused by her own weapon, which causes more than 35 million casualties when fired on Tokyo Settlement. Lloyd tells her that she'll have to become detached if she intends to continue being a scientist.
