两者都是后悔，懊悔的意思。repent 较多用于抽象的行为。如: He repented his wickedness。regret 较多用于具体的行为。如: He regretted telling his wife the bad news so soon。1. 从含义上看：regret是一个含义很广的词，可以表示“遗憾”“后悔”“惋惜”“懊悔”等，它既可用于日常生活中不太重要的小事，也可用在较庄重的场合大事；而 repent 则主要表示“后悔”“悔恨”，有时它还暗示指“悔改”。 She sold her house, but she can’t help regretting it. 她卖掉了她的房子，但她不禁感到惋惜。 I regret to say that you have failed your exam. 我很遗憾地告诉你，你考试不及格。 We repent our decision bitterly. 我们深深懊悔做出了这样的决定。2. 从语体和语气上看，regret 属常用语；而repent 则属正式用语，多用于较正式的场合，尤其用于宗教和谚语中。如： Repent (of your sins) and ask God’s forgiveness. 你要忏悔，请求上帝宽恕。 I repent having been so generous to that scoundrel. 我后悔不该对那坏家伙如此宽宏大量。 Marry in haste and repent at leisure. (谚)草率结婚后悔多。3. 从是否及物来看：regret 在现代英语中主要用作及物动词，而repent则可用作及物或不及物动词，且不及物时，通常后接介词of。如：I regret my ignorance on the subject. 对这问题无知我感到遗憾。 I regret that she should worry about it. 我很遗憾她竟会为此发愁。 He repented it. 他很为这事后悔。 He repented of it. 他很为这事后悔。 I have nothing to repent of. 我没有什么可后悔的。4. 从后续动词的形式来看：regret 后接动词作宾语时，可用不定式（表示对将要发生的事感到“遗憾”“抱歉”）或动名词（表示对已经发生的事感到“后悔”“遗憾”）；而repent 后通常只接动名词(且此用法在现代英语也不多见)，而不接不定式。如： I regret to tell you that he can’t come. 很抱歉他不能来。 We regret to say that we can’t accept your kind offer. 很抱歉我们不能接受你的友好提供。 I regret missing the film. 我懊悔没有看上那部电影。 I regret spending so much money. 我很后悔花了这么多钱。 He regretted doing [having done] it. 他后悔做了此事。 They repented staying out late. 他们后悔很晚才回家。 Allan repented having shot the bird.阿伦悔不该射死那只鸟。 He repented having stolen the car. 他后悔偷了那辆汽车。

向某人忏悔 可以说 confess to somebody confess 可以作及物动词 也可以做不及物动词 如：He confessed to God. 他向上帝忏悔。She confessed her fault. 她忏悔她的过错。

光看中文意思，两者互为近义词，都表示“后悔”，但是从使用场景来看，repent更多在书面语中使用，regret在书面语和口语中都适用，是常用语。
