The koala is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia, and the only extant representative of the family Phascolarctidae. The koala is found in coastal regions of eastern and southern Australia, from near Adelaide to the southern part of Cape York Peninsula. Populations also extend for considerable distances inland in regions with enough moisture to support suitable woodlands. The koalas of South Australia were largely exterminated during the early part of the 20th century, but the state has since been repopulated with Victorian stock. The koala is not found in Tasmania or Western Australia

The Koala is a small marsupial that lives in eucalyptus(gum) trees in Australia. These nocturnal most active at night animals spend 18 to 20 hours each day resting and sleeping. They are social animals that live in territoriesAlthough sometimes known as the native bear, the koala is in fact no relationto the bear family. The koala is up to 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 m) long, weighing 10-30 pounds (4.5-13.5 kg). The soft, woolly fur is light gray to brown, and has patches of white on the chest, neck and ears. This fur protects them from cold weather and rain. Koalas are very fussy eaters, feeding almost exclusively on the leaves of a few species of eucalypt. Koalas seldom drink, as they obtain enough water from the diet of leaves.
