The Mid-Autumn Festival is an ancient festival, and it is an important custom to worship the moon and admire the moon. In ancient times, emperors had the social system of offering sacrifices to the sun in spring and the moon in autumn, and the folk also had the wind of offering the moon in the Mid-Autumn Festival. Later, the moon was more important than the moon, and the serious sacrifice became a relaxed joy. The custom of appreciating the moon in the Mid-Autumn Festival was extremely prosperous in the Tang Dynasty. Many poets wrote poems about the moon. The court and folk worship the moon in the Song, Ming and Qing Dynasties were more large-scale. Our country still remains a lot of "worship the moon altar", "worship the moon pavilion", "watching the moon building" historic sites.

According to the record of Volume 8 of Tokyo Menghua Record (1147), the streets in the Song Dynasty were filled with a strong festive atmosphere a few days before the Mid-Autumn Festival. The shops sell new wine and redecorate the colorful buildings in front of their doors. There are pomegranates, pears, chestnuts, grapes, Cheng orange and so on. In the evening, people enjoy the moon in the restaurant, and make silk bamboo pipes. Alley children play all night, night market people shuffle, as for the dawn. The fourth volume of Dream Lianglu by Wu Zimu (alive around 1270) also recorded that families in the Southern Song Dynasty arranged more family dinners and reunion of their children on this day to reward the festival. Even poor families in the mean streets will pawn clothes to buy wine to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Jin Yingzhi (alive around 1126) wrote the fourth volume of the New Compilation of Drunkweng's Talk Record, which recorded the customs of people admiring the moon and then worshiping the moon: "The meeting of the capital to admire the moon was different from other counties. The people in the city were not rich or poor, and the people who were able to go on their own to the 12th and 13th were dressed as adults. Men are willing to walk early Toad Palace, climbing fairy laurel... women are willing to look like Chang 'e, round as clean moon."

In addition to the worship of the moon, there is also the custom of watching lanterns. The third volume of Zhou Mi's "Old Stories of Wulin" records the Mid-Autumn night in Hangzhou: "The light candle is Hua can, but the evening is stopped". Zhejiang also puts a small sheepskin water lamp "a little red" on the Mid-Autumn night. The river is covered with hundreds of thousands of lights, just like the stars in the sky, which is very eye-catching. It is said that the water lamp is to please the god of Jiang, not purely for viewing.
