生肖，又称属相或十二年兽，是以十二种动物代表年份，称为十二生肖，各文化有不同的动物，其中汉文化为鼠、牛、虎、兔、龙、蛇、马、羊、猴、鸡、狗、猪。它们依次与十二地支（子、丑、寅、卯、辰、巳、午、未、申、酉、戌、亥）相配，形成子鼠、丑牛、寅虎、卯兔、辰龙、巳蛇、午马、未羊、申猴、酉鸡、戌狗、亥猪。

中国除了用生肖纪年外，还用与之相应的十二支纪月、纪日、纪时（时辰）。十二生肖（兽历）也广泛流行于亚洲诸民族及东欧和北非的某些国家之中。

尽管中国古代历法有建子（冬至所在月份）、建丑（冬至次月）、建寅（冬至后两月）不同方式作为新年所在月份，而各种历法都以朔日，也就是看不见月亮的日子（初一）作为月首及岁首，皇帝有“正朔”即定正月初一为年初的权力。

中国的十二生肖起源，众说纷纭。有认为《史记》中黄帝“建造甲子以命岁”以及“大挠作甲子”中的“甲子”，就是指十二生肖。

清代学者赵翼则认为生肖源于中国北方的游牧民族，《陔余丛考》中载：“盖北俗初无所谓子丑寅之十二辰，但以鼠牛虎兔之类分纪岁时，浸寻流传于中国，遂相沿不废耳。”

郭沫若认为由古巴比伦传入中国的。郭沫若在其著作《甲骨文字研究·释支干》中提出：“十二肖像于巴比伦、埃及、印度均有之，然均不甚古，无出于西纪后百年以上者。意者此始汉时西域诸国，仿巴比伦之十二宫而制定之，再向四周传播者也。”
