清新洗练，幽默典雅。stardust是故意模仿老童话在写。美国众神是我最初看过的几本英文小说，后来再看其他畅销小说都觉得写好烂

畅销书老大，Stephen King，文笔不说有多好，但用词够简单，美国初中生都能看懂

Tom Clancy，细节多，文笔流畅，有团队把关。

其实我一共也没读过几本英文小说

从答案中看大家对畅销书的定义还挺广泛的。

本人看奇幻科幻比较多，绝大多数题主以前都点评推荐过了。Ursula le Guin和Philip Pullman这两个最惊艳。题主好像没提过Neil Gaiman？他的儿童书和成人奇幻质量都不错，脑洞也够大。

喜欢政治类的可以试试Bob Woodward。曾经看过一些Mark Danner写伊拉克的文章，不错。这几年不知道还写过什么。文化史类，Robert Darnton是大爱，但主要优势在于角度（华盛顿的假牙，18世纪法国色情读物之类）另外推荐一个有点儿挑战性的散文作者Joan Didion，当然和畅销不沾边。句型之复杂缠绕绝对可以让初学者崩溃。不过看惯了还是挺有味道的。

很多美国著名影评人的文都可以看看，比如得过National Book Awards的Pauline Kael和得过普利策的Roger Ebert。提起影评是因为看见答案里不止一人提起Dan Brown，于是想起毒舌的A.O. Scott的《达芬奇密码》影评：

“To their credit the director and his screenwriter... have streamlined Mr. Brown's story and refrained from trying to capture his, um, prose style. "Almost inconceivably, the gun into which she was now staring was clutched in the pale hand of an enormous albino with long white hair."
