现代的英文字母完全借用了26个拉丁字母。所谓"拉丁字母"，就是古罗马人所使用文字的字母。
英语开始成为文字，大约是在公元六世纪盎格鲁撒克逊时代。当时负责把当地人口头语言记录成文字的，是罗马天主教的传教士们。他们面临的问题是当时的英语(即古英语)共有超过40种不同的音，然而他们手中只有23个罗马字母（当时还没有J，U，W），无法一一对应。
于是他们实验了许多不同的方法，如增加字母、在字母上加变音符号、两个字母连写等等来对应不同的发音，慢慢形成了古英语的27个字母和一些拼写规则。
1066年诺曼征服之后，当时许多文书是法国人，他们抛弃了一些他们看不惯的拼写规则，又从法语中引进了一些新的规则，针对不同情况，又制定了一些新的例外。这使得当时的英文在拼写形式和用词上有了巨大的改变。有的字母被废除，有的被改造，逐渐演变为现代英语的26个字母。
