荷兰的全称是Kingdom of the Netherlands（译为“荷兰王国”）；一般情况下，Netherlands前加the的情况较为常见，因为Netherlands一般不得单独使用，而the Netherlands（译为“荷兰”）作为一个专有名词，是最为通用而简单的说法；Holland用来表示“荷兰”这个国家是一种非正式/习惯性的说法，因为最早荷兰是由北荷兰和南荷兰这两个省份作为主体构成的，Holland作为这两个省份的统称，代指“荷兰”的用法沿用至今。但是现在Holland实际上表示的是荷兰西部的一个地区而非是整个荷兰。squarehead指的是一类人，即日耳曼裔移民，而这部分移民中包括德裔、荷裔等，范围较为笼统，不特指荷兰人。Dutch则单指“荷兰人”，或者“荷兰语”。
