菠萝的英文是pineapple，然而它既不和pine tree（松树）相关，又不和apple（苹果）相关，那这个水果的英文名是怎么来的呢？
菠萝原产于巴西南部和南美洲的巴拉圭。1493年，哥伦布在加勒比海航行中，在瓜达卢普岛上发现了这种水果。
随着探险的旅程（expedition）逐步推进，菠萝到欧洲就成为了一种奢侈的水果。
那时，英国国王查尔斯二世还拍了一张官方照片，因为他收到了一个礼物——菠萝。
欧洲人对它的命名犯了难。那时apple除了指“苹果”外，还指类似苹果的果实。
如今不少果实的英语单词中都含有apple这一成分，如crab apple（山楂）、love apple（番茄）、custard apple（番荔枝）等。
欧洲人那时看菠萝外表像松果一样粗糙、分节，内部又像苹果一样脆甜，所以就把两者结合起来，称之为pineapple。
