Most of the stone arches made of bluestone were built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Exquisite pictures and words were carved on these arches of honor, the words were praises from the Emperor to the dutiful sons, loyal officials or women of chastity.

是saint的缩写，就念saint。圣保罗——St.Paul。圣保禄教堂创建於1580年，在1595年和1601年先後两次失火焚毁。教堂第三次修建由意大利籍耶稣会会士斯皮诺拉神父设计，并於1602年奠基，1635年建成，历时33年，是当时远东最大的天主教石建教堂。
1762年，葡萄牙政府下令没收耶稣会财产，天主之母教堂先後被改作军官宿舍、兵营。1835年1月26日黄昏，教堂起火，最後剩下教堂的前壁。由於教堂前壁形似中国的传统牌坊，故本地人便称之为「大三巴牌坊」。
澳门圣保禄教堂又叫大三巴牌坊。
大三巴牌坊，其正式名称为圣保禄大教堂遗址（葡萄牙语：Ruínas da Antiga Catedral de São Paulo），一般称为大三巴或牌坊，是澳门天主之母教堂（圣保禄教堂）正面前壁的遗址。大三巴牌坊是澳门的标志性建筑物之一，同时也为「澳门八景」之一。2005年与澳门历史城区的其他文物成为联合国世界文化遗产。
大三巴牌坊是位於圣保禄山的天主之母教堂（A lgreja da Madre de Deus）前壁。与大炮台及两者之间的前圣保禄学院为一整体。而「三巴」这个名字是来自於「圣保禄」的葡萄牙文，而「大」是指最大的教堂，故「大三巴」是指「最大的教堂」。
