This is part of its charm, as is the wooden phone booth that sits neglected (忽略) in the age of the cellphone. Ah, the phone booth. We need it now more than ever. For me it symbolizes that phone calls were once private affairs, even if the information being shared was not sensitive in any way. It was simply assumed that a phone conversation was meant for two people, and two people only. Growing up in the 1960s, we had only phone in the house. As a kid, I didn’t get, or make many calls because all my friends live within earshot and I could just yell out the window if I wanted their attention. I do, however, remember answering the phone, asking for the identity of the caller, and then handing the phone to my mom. She’d take it, say “Hello, Mrs…one moment please,” and then as she placed her hand over the receiver, she turned to me, and directed, “This is for me. Why don’t you go outside and play?”

Parents should allow children to choose their own reading material. Even if a mother or father is just standing with the child when the bookseller asks him/her what he/she likes to read, we have found that the child will give an answer he/she thinks his/her parent wants to hear. It will not be the same answer he/she would give alone, said Norris. Norris said, “What we have found is that parents should not worry whether a title looks too young or too old for a child. If it is children’s favourite book, then let them take it.” “Children,” added Norris, “often enjoy reading books that are easy for them to understand. My father made me read The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy when I was much too young, which, I think, was totally wrong, and I have never read another Clancy since.” LONDON—Global auction sales of Chinese art and antiques fell in 2019 to $5. 7 billion, a 10 percent drop year — on — year, and the lowest level for the collecting category since 2010. The Global Chinese Art Auction market report, compiled by Artnet and the Chinese Association of Auctioneers, found this was due to trade tensions between the United States and China, as well as a slowdown of GDP in China.
