AD，全称是Anno Domini。
公历纪年以耶稣诞生之年作为纪年的开始。在儒略历与格里高利历中，在耶稣诞生之后的日期，称为主的年份Anno Domini（A.D.）（拉丁）。而在耶稣诞生之前，称为主前Before Christ（B.C.）。
但是现代学者为了淡化其宗教色彩以及避免非基督徒的反感而多半改称用“公元”（Common era，缩写为C.E.）与“公元前”（Before the Common Era，缩写为 B.C.E.）的说法。
用法
公元，是纪年法称谓，为纪年体系。该纪年法是以耶稣诞生为公元元年，公元元年之前的称公元前。所谓的2021年就是从公元元年开始算起的两千零二十一年。
需要注意的是：虽然0是自然数，但并不存在公元前0年或公元0年。公元前1年之后的一年，是公元1年，为公元元年。虽然公元前的纪年是倒着数，后面的数目小于前面的数目，例如西汉成立的公元前202年，晚于秦朝成立的公元前221年，但具体到每一年的月份，还是正着数，1月在前，12月在后，日期也如此，初一在前，十五在后。
