绕口令在英语中被称作“绕舌话”（tongue twister）或“难念语”（word cramp），通常指绕口的词语表达。目前，互联网上有相当数量的英语绕口令汇集，国内也出版了十几本英语绕口令汇编的专题图书，一些中小学（英语）教辅期刊也不时刊登英文绕口令。这些都为绕口令用于欣赏英语语言艺术、促进英语语言习得提供了可利用的丰富资源。国内一些中小学英语教材，如《快乐英语》、《英语新标准》（小学版）、人教版初中英语教材等也含有少量英文绕口令。但英语绕口令作为一种重要的课程资源在操作层面上尚未得到应有的重视和研究。英语课程教学领域关于绕口令的`专题教学研究极为罕见，少量英语教学研究论文即使涉及到绕口令与英语教学的话题也只是作出附带性的说明，未做系统、深入、全面的探究。
来自思维定势的认识表明，绕口令只与语音、口语训练相联系。但从可操作层面上来看，绕口令作为一种课程资源在英语学科教学过程的应用并不仅仅局限于此。从绕口令与英语学习的关联来看，英语绕口令可以促进英语学习心理发展、帮助学生练习英语口语和了解英语语言在语音、词汇、语法和语篇等层面的特点。因此，绕口令是一种值得开发与利用的英语课程资源。
