我与食俱进
描写的是菩提达摩。
有一天，达摩向他的师傅求教说：“我得到佛法以后，应到何地传化？”般若多罗说：“你应该去震旦（即中国）”。又说：“你到震旦以后，不要住在南方，那里的君主喜好功业，不能领悟佛理”。
达摩遵照师父的嘱咐，准备好行李，驾起一叶扁舟，乘风破浪，飘洋过海，用了三年时间，历尽艰难曲折，来到了中国。达摩到中国以后，广州刺史得知此事，急忙禀报金陵，梁武帝萧衍立即派使臣把达摩接到京都，为其接风洗尘，宾客相待。
达摩和梁武帝对话后，梁武帝深感懊悔，得知达摩离去的消息后，马上派人骑骡追赶。追到幕府山中段时，两边山峰突然闭合，一行人被夹在两峰之间。达摩正走到江边，看见有人赶来，就在江边折了一根芦苇投入江中，化作一叶扁舟，飘然过江。
达摩“一苇渡江”后，在江北长芦寺停留，后又至定山如禅院驻锡，面壁修行。“面壁而坐，终日默然，人莫之测”。在此期间，收弟子慧可，有慧可“立雪断臂”的故事流行于世。
之后，他与弟子继续北行传法。但同当年在南方一样，是非常的不顺利。不仅受人“讥谤”，而且还遭到了光统律师、流支三藏等人的人身迫害，竟然六次被毒，最终因中毒不救而死。葬于熊耳山，起塔于定林寺。
但是又传，在他死后三年，魏使宋云自西域回国时，又在葱岭遇到他。见他手携只履，翩翩独逝。当时宋云间他：大师到哪里去?他的回答是：回西天去。所以，又有“只履西归”的传说。

菩提达摩（英文：Bodhidharma，又称：菩提达磨），意译为觉法。自称佛传禅宗第二十八祖，为中国禅宗的始祖，故中国的禅宗又称达摩宗，达摩被尊称为“东土第一代祖师”、“达摩祖师”，与宝志禅师、傅大士合称梁代三大士。
于中国南朝梁武帝时期航海到广州。梁武帝信佛，达摩至南朝都城建业会梁武帝，面谈不契，遂一苇渡江，北上北魏都城洛阳，后卓锡嵩山少林寺，面壁九年，传衣钵于慧可。后出禹门游化终身。
著作有《少室六门》上下卷，包括《心经颂》、《破相论》、《二种入》、《安心法门》、《悟性论》、《血脉论》6种。
