The origin of this summer festival centers around a scholarly government official named Chu Yuan. He was a good and respected man,but because of the misdeeds of jealous rivals he eventually fell into disfavor in the emperors court.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional lunar calendar. The exact date varies from year to year on the Gregorian calendar. In 2014, it occurred on June 2; in 2015, it occurred on June 20, and in 2016, it falls on June 9.
