羊皮筏子的制法是将21－23根2－4公分粗的圆柳棍用绳扎成约两米宽，三米长，隔成许多小格子的长方形框架再把十四个充气的羊皮筏子排列整齐，一并拴牢于架上，渡河时将羊皮一面置于水中，摆渡时皮筏顺流而下，返回时，则由筏客扛于肩头，步行至上游，古有“下水人乘筏，上水筏乘人”之说，关于制作羊皮筏子还有一段顺口溜“窜死一只羊，剥下一张皮，捂掉一身毛，涮上一层油，曝晒一个月，吹上一口气，绑成一排排，可赛洋军舰，漂它几十年，逍遥似神仙。抗战时期，兰州一筏子客用羊皮筏子从四川广元运输汽油到重庆，这个轰动山城的故事，成为兰州百姓的美谈，并以“羊皮筏子赛军舰”美誉而载入史册。
