是公吨是公制的单位，在英文中原本的表达法为tonne或者metric ton。由于用公吨的人太多，人都喜欢偷懒，故常把metric ton缩略为ton。国外客户说ton的时候，有可能是指metric ton。中国人说吨，其实指的都是公吨，因为中国采用公制。顿，或称公顿、公吨，是公制的质量单位。其虽非国际单位制(SI)基本单位之一，但符合十进制在使用上是可以与国际单位制相合。这两个单位和公斤的换算关系不同。1公吨＝1000公斤，1吨＝1016公斤或907．2公斤。它们都是重量单位，相同的重量单位还有。千克、克、1千克=1公斤=2斤；1千克=1000克；1斤=500克。千克又作公斤，为国际基本质量单位，符号 kg。
