Distinguished Professor是杰出教授。属于美国特殊的职称序列。美国教授职称序列分类：一、美国正式的教授职称序列分为三个层次：助理教授(Assistant Professor)、副教授(Associate Professor)与正教授(full Professor)。一般来说，只有到了副教授的时候，才能进入到“终身教职”的行列。二、在美国，除了 “正式的”序列之外，还有特殊的职称序列，如“荣誉退休教授”(Professor Emeritus)、“杰出教授”(Distinguished Professor)、“校聘教授”(University Professor)、“讲席教授”(Named/Endowed Chair)等。这些都是更为高级、仅只授予在学术界作出了杰出贡献的少数顶尖学者的职称。这些“特殊序列”，同样属于“终身教职”的序列。三、在美国，还有一些“非终身教职”的序列，如“讲师”(Lecturer/Instructor)、“访问教授”或者“访问讲师”、“兼职教授”(Adjunct Professor)、“研究教授”(Research Professor)、“名誉教授”(Honorary Professor)等。

特聘教授是指特别聘任的教授。这个词汇有两层含义，首先它是一个荣誉，给与具有特殊学术贡献或是专长的学者；其次它具有合约性质，指此一职务的给与具有一定期限。在中国特聘教授的期限一般是五年，授予特聘教授的条件可以是本校既有的教授，也可以是外校或是国际学者。

特聘教授一般具有博士学位，在教学科研第一线工作，自然科学类原则上45周岁以下，人文社会科学类原则上50周岁以下，特别突出和紧缺的人才，年龄可适当放宽。国外应聘者一般应担任高水平大学助理教授及以上职位或其他相应职位，国内应聘者应担任教授或相应职位。
