wc--厕所很早以前，厕所Toilet里都有水箱water closet，人们一提到water closet就想到了toilet，因此water closet就成了toilet的代名词。后来为了方便，人们就用water closet的开头字母W.C.来代替toilet。但wc是一种很粗俗的表达方式（相当于中国乡村常在厕所中标“大便处”“小便处”），是英美等国一二百年前使用的，现在一般不用WC，而使用TOILET，Bathroom，Restroom(Am)等较文雅的词。在中国传入多年，许多中国人都知道WC是公共厕所的英文简称，但实际上此缩写在英文国家根本就不使用。取而代之的是Toilet 或者其他单词，所以真正讲英文的人到了中国却不知道此缩写代表什么意思。 在美国，绝对没有人使用这个缩写的。一般称为，Restroom 或者 Bathroom，有些地方也用 Washroom。在中国用 WC 来代表厕所，可以说是中式英语的一种变异。因此建议中国人，在中国，用中文，这样就可以避免这种不伦不类的现象发生了。WC词义本身与Toilet区别不大，但是从修辞上说，前者给人的印象是简陋、不太卫生，而后者非但有洁净、舒适的感觉，而且还可以在里面梳妆打扮。Toilet这个词来源于法语，就法语“香水”一词（l’eaudutoilet）也和Toilet有关，可见还是很有高雅的感觉。文雅的翻法把Toilet译作“公共洗手间”。W．C.一词是water-closet的缩写，其中closet一字本作“小室”解。《二十世纪辞典》对water-closet的解释是：一间用作储藏的小室，“排出物”是用水冲走的。WC的意思，所以曾被广泛采用。但是由于人人皆知WC所指为何，因此有些人认为不雅，便以其他较含蓄的字眼来替代，如lavatory,restroom,bathroom,toiletpowder-room等字，都可以用来指厕所。在一般公众场所，厕所向例以性别区分，男用的多写上men，或gent’s，女用的则写上women或ladies‘。所以在外国人口中，WC一词基本已消失；但在很多以英语为基础外语的地方却还保留着，因为易于上口，一听之后便不会忘记，这可以算是语言上的一种特色。WC不仅有上述含义，还有汉语拼音中“王朝”的意思，WC是“王朝”的拼音的缩写。由此看来，它并不完全是一句脏话。目前，又出现了一个新的含意——“龌龊”的缩写。由此看来，它还是一句有点脏的话。wc=welcome，源自印度。
