电子数据交换(ElectronicDataInterchange简写为EDI)就是指有关当事人按照协议或规定，用约定的标准，编排有关的数据，通过计算机向计算机传输业务往来信息。其实质是通过约定的商业数据表示方法，实现数据经由网络在贸易伙伴所拥有的计算机应用系统之间的交换和自动处理，达到迅捷和可靠的目的。利用EDI技术传输、处理的单证称为电子单证。EDI技术在国际商业贸易中的应用，促使国际商业贸易方式产生重大的变革。由于使用EDI技术可以减少甚至消除贸易过程中的纸面单据，因而应用EDI技术进行的贸易方式被称为"无纸贸易"。目前，在发达国家已经建立了大量的连接各子公司、同行业竞争者、相关合作伙伴（如海关、货运代理、船公司、集装箱运输经营人）的EDI系统。EDI技术的应用水平已经成为衡量一个企业在国际国内市场竞争能力大小的重要标志。在一些国家，甚至对不使用EDI的行业和企业采取一定的限制和制裁措施。如美国、澳大利亚等国家相继规定必须使用EDI方式报关才能靠港装卸，否则将推迟受理和另增费用，由此造成的船舶延迟损失由船东自负。有些国家的船公司开辟航线，对挂靠我国港口提出的首要条件就是有EDI。
