一、example的词义辨析：

specimen, illustration, case, example, instance, sample这组词都有“例子、事例”的意思，其区别是：

1、specimen 可与sample换用，但常指人或物中选出的有代表性部分，或指供科研、化验或检验用的标本。

2、illustration 指用来说明、解释某种理论或看法而引用的例证。

3、case 多指需要加以认真研究的实例，如病例，案例等。

4、example 普通用词，指能代表同类事物性质或一般规律的典型例子。

5、instance 多指用于说明、支持或反证一般事实或理论的事例。

6、sample 通常指样品。

二、example的用法：

1、example的基本意思是“例子，实例”。引申可指“样品，范例”“榜样，楷模”，有时还可指“警告”“先例”等。

2、set sb an example〔set an example to sb〕 的意思是“给某人树立榜样”; make an example of sb (for sth)的意思是“(因…)惩罚某人以儆效尤”。

3、for example的意思是“例如”或“譬如”，无论举出一个或几个例证， example都须用单数形式。常用作插入语，可缩写为e.g.。用了for example，就不宜再用etc.。
