万圣节的英文是All Saints' Day，Halloween是万圣节前夜的意思，不是万圣节。

万圣节的实际时间是每年的11月1日。历史上罗马帝国将基督宗教正式定为国教初期，基督教会将原来几年亡灵的11月1日all souls‘ day”改为纪念所有圣徒的节日。所以万圣节是11月1日英文November 1st。 万圣节来源于古代的凯尔特民族（Celtic），其实是他们新年节庆的日子，此时也是他们祭祀亡魂的时刻，避免收到亡灵的干扰，同时也是向祖灵祈福保佑能够平安的度过冬季，那天小孩子们会穿上化妆服，带上面具，挨家挨户的索要糖果，他们的口号是：没有糖果就捣蛋!（Trick or treat!）后来这个节日逐渐在西方乃至一些东方国家蔓延开来，每到这一天孩子们由家长带着一起出门，一般是家长把车子停到路边，孩子们去敲门索要糖果。但他们只是在门口有节日布置且点亮了节日灯的人家敲门索要。
