冠词是一种虚词，本身有一定的含义，主要放在名词前起限定作用(前置定语)，大约70%的名词前面必须用冠词，但在中文看来冠词大多数是多余的，因此要养成用冠词的习惯，一定要加强训练。
3.定冠词的基本用法
定冠词的大多数用法是有规律的，只有少数不规则或者用法特殊。
3.1 the放在名词前，有以指确定的、已知的事物，通常含有“这(个、种、些)、那(个、种、些)”的意思，该含义大多数时候不必或者不宜译出来。这是一条指导性很强、应用最广的规律。例如：
The/That window is open.
(那)窗户是开着的。
Shall I carry the/this suitcase for you?
要我帮你扛(这)手提箱吗?
Have you sent off the/those parcels?
你已把(那些)包裹寄走了吗?
The/These rooms on this floor are very large.
这层楼的(这层)房间都很大。
要领：
反过来，当名词前不能加this，that, these或者those时，通常就不能用定冠词，意思就变了：
Water is valuable.
水是宝贵的。(泛指一般的水)
The water is valuable.
这(种)水是宝贵的。(确定指这种水)
I love poems.
我喜欢诗。(泛指诗这一类作品)
I love the poems.
我喜欢这些诗。(限定这些诗)
3.2定冠词放在单数可数名词前，表示一类事物
The fox is normally foxy.
狐狸通常很狡猾。
The careful reader must have noticed this change.
细心的读者一定注意到了这种变化。
We have to watch the dollar closely.
我们必须密切注视美元的动向。
3.3世上独一无二的东西前要用定冠词
The sum is rising slowly.
太阳正在缓缓升起。
Look at the moon.看月亮。
There are many mysteries in the universe.
宇宙中存在许多种神秘的东西。
She plans to travel around the world.
她打算环游世界。
3.4第二次提到的，以及与前文内容有直接关系(如所属关系)的东西前也常常用定冠词
We can to a river. The river (第二次提到)was very wide and the water (指river的水) was running fast.
我们来到一条河边。(这条)河很宽，(河的)水流得很快。
Jane has got a car. The car looked terrific, butthe engine doesn’t work well sometimes.
珍妮买了一台小车。车倒是挺好看，但(它的)发动机有时出毛病。
