乔治是一名电视台记者兼节目主持人,与妻儿生活平静而幸福,然而某日他们收到奇怪的录像带,不知是谁偷拍了全家的日常生活,从大门口到房屋里都被人肆意的窥视。开始时乔治以为是恶作剧,然而更多的邮包不加防备的出现打乱正常的生活进程,每次送来的录像带和随之附上恐怖的图画给家庭带来的是敏感,紧张和不信任,一家三口在这种看不见的威胁之下生活,却又无可奈何。幸而随着录像内容的逐步深入和私人化,乔治判断寄信者必定与自己相识已久。从自己童年开始回忆,最终怀疑上一个贫穷的儿时朋友。然而由于没有证据,甚至也未发生任何实际危险,警察无法插手,乔治只能独自查访。情况在儿子失踪后突然变得严重,乔治坚持认为一切都是那位朋友所作所为,朋友一再辩解无效,最终当着乔治的面割喉自杀了。乔治充满自责的回到家里,依然要面对妻子的质疑和儿子的担心。没过几天,儿子平安无事的回来了,原来只是私自去朋友家过夜,所有的事件似乎已经过去,生活归于平静。然而送信和偷拍者最终依然没有找到,乔治又要面对死去朋友的儿子,故事不知向何处发展,影片也就在一个儿子放学的长镜头后打出字幕,戛然而止。
