管路布置中必须遵循以下原则：
1、首先全面地了解工程对管路布置的要求，充分了解工艺流程、建筑结构、设备及管口配置等情况。对工程管路作出合理的初步布置；
2、冷热管道应分开布置，难避免时应热管在上冷管在下。有腐蚀物料的管道，应布置在平列管道的下侧或外侧。管道敷设应有坡度，坡度方向一般均沿物料流动方向；
3、管道应集中架空布置，尽量走直线少拐弯，管道应避免出现‘气袋’和‘盲肠’。支管多的管道应布置在并行管道的外侧，分支气体管从上方引出，而液体管在下方引出；
4、通过道路或受负荷地区的地下管道，应加保护措施。行走过道顶的管道至地面的高度应高于2.2米。有一定重量的管道和阀门，一般不能支承在设备上；
5、阀门要布置在便于操作的部位，对开关频繁的阀门应按操作顺序排列。重要的阀门或易开错的阀门，相互间要拉开一定的距离，并涂刷不同的颜色。
管路布置图以管路的工艺流程图和总平面布置图为基础设计绘制出，用来指导工程的施工安装。
管路布置图中一般应绘制出全部工艺管路和辅助管路，当管路较复杂时也可分别画出。对不同的管路必须用标准所规定的管路图示符号绘制，以表达出管路的走向和相互间的位置关系。当局部管路较密集表达欠清楚时，可画出其局部放大图。
管路中的各种类型的管件，必须采用管件和阀件图示符号和连接图示符号绘制出来。
工程管路布置图中，需要标注管路的平面布置和安装标高尺寸，标注设备和管件的代码、编号及尺寸等，并注写必要的文字说明。
标注尺寸时常以建筑定位轴线、设备的中心线、管路的延长线等为尺寸界线；尺寸线的起始点可采用45°的短细斜线来代替箭头，尺寸常标注成连续的串联形式。通常平面图中的尺寸以毫米为单位，而标高尺寸则以米为单位。
