注意英文crystal既包括天然水晶石，也包括水晶玻璃、水晶玻璃制品。普通玻璃是钠玻璃，除此之外还有一种石英玻璃，即二氧化硅（SiO2)组成的玻璃。石英玻璃分透明和不透明两种，透明石英玻璃即以水晶为原料制造的，特别是光学石英玻璃用纯净的水晶制造。 水晶主要化学成份是二氧化硅，化学式SiO2。跟普通砂子-石英是同一种物质。石英和水晶一样都是结晶的二氧化硅，只不过石英结晶条件不好，没有形成完美的晶体。 水晶则是二氧化硅的完美结晶体；二氧化硅含水的胶体凝固后则成为蛋白石，玛瑙则是二氧化硅胶化脱水形成的；二氧化硅晶粒小于几微米时，就组成玉髓、燧石、次生石英岩。 纯净的水晶化学成分中含硅（Si）和氧（O）分别为46.7％和53.3％，呈现为纯净无色透明的状态。有的水晶矿石呈现不同的颜色，是因为含有其他不同的化学物质，如下图就是紫水晶，往往含有锰和铁，工业生产中制造有色玻璃也是添加类似的物质，紫色玻璃就是加入二氧化锰制成的，黄色玻璃则是加入氧化铁。 水晶硬度为摩氏7，水晶具有跟一般石英类似的压电性。
