1、主要用于连接两个对等的成分；若连接两个成分作主语，其后谓语动词与靠近的主语保持一致。

例：She likes not only music but also sport.

2、not only…but also…中的also通常可以省略，或换成too, as well（要置于句末），有时甚至连 but also 一并省略掉。
