创作背景
席慕蓉说，在她看来，生命是不断的经过、经过、经过，她写的东西都是在生命现场里所得到的触动，尽管有些触动要等到一二十年后才恍然大悟。
为了解释自己在生命现场里的触动，席慕蓉讲述了《一棵开花的树》的创作过程。她回忆说，当时自己在台湾新竹师范学院教书。5月份有一次坐火车经过苗栗的山间，火车不断从山洞间进出。当火车从一个很长的山洞出来以后，她无意间回头朝山洞后面的山地上张望，看到高高的山坡上有一棵油桐开满了白色的花。
“那时候我差点叫起来，我想怎么有这样一棵树，这么慎重地把自己全部开满了花，看不到绿色的叶子，像华盖一样地站在山坡上。可是，我刚要仔细看的时候，火车一转弯，树就看不见了。”
就是这棵真实地存在于席慕蓉生命现场里的油桐，让她念念不忘。她心想，正如海是蓝给自己看一样，花当然也是慎重地开给它自己的，但是，如果没有自己那一回头的机缘，树上的花儿是不是就会纷纷凋零？这促使她写下了《一棵开花的树》。
