因为基因的命名没有规律，一般小写指基因，大写指该基因的表达产物。缩写有时候是对功能的描述，不如AP-2，既可以是指adaptor protein 2, 也可以指activating protein 2。所以要根据上下文。还有些基因，是按照最先发现的相关疾病来命名，比如Rb, retinoblastoma, 后来才发现还和其他肿瘤有关。还有，比如我发现了一个新基因，就以我自己的名字命名。所以千万不要死记缩写，要弄懂他们的出处，这样懂了以后，就不用死记硬背也知道了。
