...thewarandthesufferingitcaused...itcaused是suffering的定语从句，其关系代词that或which被省略，因为这个关系代词在从句中作caused的宾语，故可以省略。即：...thewarandthesuffering(that/which)itcaused,it指的是thewar，即战争及战争所导致的苦难如果如你所写，那就成了...sufferingwhichcaused...which引导的定语从句修饰的是suffering在句中作主语，那么苦难caused了什么？caused是个及物动词，其后没有宾语，句意不完整（及物动词后面必须有宾语，没有宾语就得是被动形式），所以不对。这样的解释不知你理解了没有。
