Hell是最常用的来自于日耳曼语。Inferno多与火焰联系起来。inferno的另外一个意思即是火海，在但丁的神曲中Inferno即指地狱。purgatory则为炼狱，来自于purge净化的词根－purgare，炼狱则是罪孽的人在里面受苦然后得到净化的地方。
