泰戈尔（Rabindranath Tagore）出生于孟加拉。但人们一致认为他是印人。泰戈尔的《飞鸟集》（Stray bird）1913年发表，是用孟加拉文写的。据说当年凡是讲孟加拉话的地方没有人不日日歌咏他的诗歌的。泰戈尔的诗是在他自己把它们译成英文之后才广为世人所知。

《飞鸟版集》包括了325首清丽的小诗。这些诗的基本题材不外乎小草，流萤，落叶，飞鸟，山水，河流。1913年《吉檀迦利》英译本出版，泰戈尔成为亚洲第一个获诺贝尔文学奖的作家。
