汉堡包的英文是hamburge。
hamburger是一种夹牛肉饼的面包，通常认为这个词来自于德国城市汉堡Hamburg，在19世纪中期的德国移民浪潮中被传到美国。
1836年，在美国人的菜单上出现了一道以Hamburg steak命名的菜，按字面义是“汉堡牛排”，其实是“碎牛肉饼”，到了1889年Hamburg Steak改称Hamburger Steak，到了1908年被进而缩略为Hamburger。
到了1912年许多人都喜欢在面包里夹上汉堡牛排，于是Hamburger一词除了指“汉堡牛排”外又多了一层意义：“夹汉堡牛排的面包”，这就是现在通称的“汉堡包”。
汉堡的由来
其实原始的汉堡包就是剁碎的牛肉末和面 做成的肉饼，故称为牛肉饼。古代鞑靼人有生吃牛肉的习惯，随着鞑靼人的西迁，先传入巴尔干半岛，而后传到德意志，逐渐改生食为熟食。
德国汉堡地区的人将其加以改进，将剁碎的牛肉泥揉在面粉中，摊成饼煎烤来吃，遂以地名而称为“汉堡肉饼”。1850年，德国移民将汉堡肉饼烹制技艺带到美国。
1932年有人将这种油炸牛肉饼夹入表面撒有芝麻的小圆面包中作为主食或点心食用，后来花样翻新，逐渐与三明治合流，将牛肉饼夹在一剖为二的小面包当中，被称为汉堡包，意为有汉包。

By the middle of the 19th century people in Hamburg, Germany, the busiest port in West Germany today, enjoyed pounded beefsteak in some form. Perhaps brought to America by the large numbers of Germans who migrated around that time, this sort of dish with the name Hamburg steak may have appeared on a menu as early as 1836.
