在生活中我们经常会经历焦急等待的时候，可能是等待一次重要的考试的结果，也可能是等待别人做出的什么重要的决定。英语中有很多 短语 描述事情“悬而未决”，今天我们来学几个。
1. wait for the other shoe to drop
这个短语按照字面意思来解释就是“等另一只鞋子掉下来”。这个习惯用语可能来自这样的情景： 一位旅馆客人正在迷迷糊糊进入梦乡时，被头顶上沉闷的一声响惊醒了。他回过神来一想，哦，一定是楼上的旅客上床脱鞋一只皮鞋掉地板上的声音，于是他再也合不上眼了，屏息静气地等待另一只鞋再掉下来，才能安心入睡。Wait for the other shoe to drop可以引申为“提心吊胆地等待最后结果”。例如：
Business is bad so the firm has to fire 100 employees. They've already announced the first 50, and now the rest of us are waiting for the other shoe to drop.
业务不景气，所以公司不得不辞退100名雇员。他们已经宣布了首批五十名解雇人员的名单，目前我们留下来的这些人都在提心吊胆地等待最后结果。
2. the jury is still out
美国的司法程序是陪审人员组成的陪审团须列席法庭，在听完原告和被告的证词之后他们要退出法庭商议被告是否有罪。作出裁决后，陪审团回法庭由法官宣读他们的裁决。所以the jury is still out，就是陪审团还在庭外商议，尚未作出谁是谁非的决断，可以引申为“结果还未见分晓”。例如：
Well, the first sales figures from New York look good. But we're waiting to hear the figures from Chicago and Los Angeles, so I have to tell you the jury is still out.
第一批来自纽约的销售数据看起来不错，但是他们还在等待芝加哥和洛杉矶两地的数据，所以目前(整体销售情况如何)还没有定论。
3. not over till the fat lady sings
这话按照字面意思来说就是“不到那位胖女士唱的时候就还没完”。古典大歌剧的格局比较严谨，往往以女主角的唱段来结束全剧。唱主角的歌剧演员虽然并非都是大胖子，但是一出歌剧长达几个小时，当主角的得从头到尾一连几小时地唱，要是没有健壮的体格是难以胜任的。她们多半得比一般人吃得多，体力才支撑得住。所以挑大梁的歌剧演员常会发福。这样一来歌剧就往往是一位胖女士在最后压台了。
第一个使用not over till the fat lady sings这句话的是华盛顿职业 篮球 队的一位教练。十多年前这个球队在参加锦标赛中一度处于劣势。按照规定在那一系列比赛中第一个打赢四场比赛的球队可以得到冠军，但是华盛顿队却输了两场，一场也没赢。然而华盛顿篮球队的教练并没因此而打退堂鼓。他接受记者采访的时候表示，他的球队还是大有希望。他说: "It's not over until the fat lady sings." 这个习惯用语从此广为流传，如今不但应用在体育界，也用在争名逐利的商界，意为“事情还没定局，仍然有得胜的转机”，这话往往用在形势似乎不好的时候，表示对于成功仍抱着乐观的希望。例如：
You guys know we're only two games behind the leader with eight games left to play. We still have a chance to catch up: remember it's not over till the fat lady sings.
要知道我们比领先球队仅仅落后两场球，而且我们还有八场比赛要打。所以我们有希望后来居上。记住还没到定局的时候呢!
