在英语中，农民这个词有两种译法即：farmer或peasant。
farmer是英国英语。是指在英，美等国家拥有或经营农场的人，也叫“农场主；农夫;农民”
peasant是美国英语。指在一些发展中国家（非英，美等发达国家）自己拥有或租有一小块土地，从事耕作的人，即“农民，小自耕农”。我国的农民称作peasant。
peasant与farmer的实质区别是：peasant的概念是先赋性的，它所含的身份含义不是个人所能控制的，来自家庭或其他的先天性条件，而farmer的身份概念是自致性的，它主要有职业而来。
