据《周礼》记载，我国早在三千多年以前就在路边道旁建有厕所。
在《说文字释》中诠释「厕」字时说，「厕，言人杂在上，非一也……言至秽之处宜常修治，使洁清也。」可见厕所的设置完全是为人所方便，保持环境清洁卫生。
