Mother"s Day was first suggested in the United States in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace. A campaign to establish a National Mother"s Day was begun in 1907.

It was successful, by 1911 Mother"s Day was celebrated in almost every state in recognition of the influence mothers have in the making of better citizens.

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that the birthday of Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis, the "mother of Mother"s Day", would become the National Mother"s Day of the United States.

And that from then on, the second Sunday in May would be Mother"s Day in memory of the work Mrs.

Jarvis had done to bring families together after the Civil war, her work to bring the whole North and South together, her work to honor all the mothers of America throughout history and on into the future, but most of all to honor Mrs.

Anna Reeves Jarvis as America"s National Mother. President Wilson asked that the American people fly the United States flag from public buildings and homes on that day as he said, as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.

Mother's Day, as a holiday to thank mothers, first appeared in ancient Greece on January 8, while in China, the United States, Canada and some other countries, it is the second Sunday in May.

Other countries have different dates. Mothers usually receive gifts on this day. Carnations are considered flowers for mothers. And our mother's flower is Hemerocallis fulva, also called Forget Sadness Grass.

Historians claim that it was probably in ancient Greece that people celebrated the Festival of the Goddess of Ria. The goddess was the mother of Zeus, from whom almost all the Greek gods came.

On this day, the ancient Greeks paid tribute to the mother of the Greek gods, Cybele (the mother of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Hera and Hestia, hence the mother of the gods).

By the time of ancient Rome, the scale of these activities became larger, and celebrations often lasted for three days. Of course, the worship of goddess in ancient times was just a superstition, which is quite different from the respect of motherhood today.

In the mid-17th century, Mother's Day spread to England. The fourth Sunday of Lent was regarded as Mother's Day by the British. On this day, young people who go out will return home and bring small gifts to their mothers.

First observance in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1907, it is based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and by Anna Jarvis in 1907.Although it wasn't celebrated in the U.S. until 1907, there were days honoring mothers even in the days of ancient Greece. In those days, however, it was Rhea, the Mother of the gods that was given honor.Later, in the 1600's, in England there was an annual observance called "Mothering Sunday." It was celebrated during June, on the fourth Sunday. On Mothering Sunday, the servants, who generally lived with their employers, were encouraged to return home and honor their mothers. It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion. In the U.S., in 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. The next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. Mother's Day originated in the United States. On May 9, 1906, Anna Jarvis'mother died in Philadelphia, USA. She was very sad. In the following year, Miss Anna organized activities to remember her mother and encouraged others to express their gratitude to their mothers in a similar way. On May 10, 1913, the United States Senate and House of Representatives passed a resolution, signed by President Wilson proclamation, deciding that the second Sunday of May each year is Mother's Day.

The earliest festival in China was in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Over time, "Mother's Day" became a national holiday to thank mothers. People use carnations to symbolize the flower of motherly love and place their feelings of missing and filial piety on carnations, which have become indispensable gifts for mothers.

The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and the earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.In the 1600's, the Christians in England celebrated a day to honour Mary, the mother of Christ.By a religious order, the holiday was later expanded to include all mothers, and named as the Mothering Sunday.Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period before Easter), 'Mothering Sunday' honoured all the mothers of England. During this period many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants lived at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday, the servants would have the day off and returned home to spend the day with their mothers. They brought along a special cake ('mothering cake') to give a festive touch to the event. As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honour the 'Mother Church' (the town’s main church).Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration. People began honouring their mothers as well as the church.
