DM是英文direct mail advertising的省略表述，直译为“直接邮寄广告”，即通过邮寄、赠送等形式，将宣传品送到消费者手中、家里或公司所在地。亦有将其表述为direct magazine advertising(直投杂志广告)。两者没有本质上的区别，都强调直接投递（邮寄）。因此，DM是区别于传统的广告刊载媒体：报纸、电视、广播、互联网等的新型广告发布载体。传统广告刊载媒体贩卖的是内容，然后再把发行量二次贩卖给广告主，而DM 则是贩卖直达目标消费者广告通道。DM形式有广义和狭义之分，广义上包括广告单页，如大家熟悉的街头巷尾、商场超市散布的传单，肯德基、麦当劳的优惠卷亦能包括其中；狭义的仅指装定成册的集纳型广告宣传画册!
