October 31 is Halloween, one of the most popular festivals in the US, Canada and Britain. The festival began as a day to remember the dead. But nowadays it's all about the carnival atmosphere when people can enjoy dressing up and scaring each other.Halloween is also a time for masquerade parties. Witches fly in on broomsticks, while ghosts and skeletons chat on the dance floor.A well-known Halloween tradition is to make lanterns from pumpkins, called "Jack-o-lanterns". First, the inside of the pumpkin is removed. Then, a face is cut into the pumpkin, traditionally a smiling, devil face. Finally a candle is placed inside, and the lantern is put at the front of the house to keep evil spirits away.

Halloween is always celebrated on 31 October. Halloween is one of the oldest celebrations in the world, dating back over 2000 years to the time of the Celts who lived in Britain Halloween is also know by other names: All Hallows Eve Samhain All Hallowtide The Feast of the Dead The Day of the Dead Halloween in Welsh is 'Nos Calan Gaeaf'. Halloween is correctly spelt as Hallowe’en. When Christianity came to England and the rest of Europe, 1 November became All Saints Day - a day dedicated to all those saints who didn't have a special day of their own. They performed a mass called 'All hallows mass' and the night before became known as All Hallows E'en and eventually Hallowe’en or Halloween. When the Romans conquered England, they merged Samhain with their own festivals, a harvest festival called Poloma, and a celebration for the dead called Feralia. In Mexico, they celebrate El Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead starting the evening of October 31. It is thought that the colours orange and black became Halloween colours because orange is associated with harvests (Halloween marks the end of harvest) and black is associated with death. Black cats were originally believed to protect witches' powers from negative forces. A pumpkin is really a squash, and comes from the same family as the cucumber. About 99% of pumpkins sold are used as Jack O' Lanterns at Halloween. The biggest pumpkin in the world tipped the scales at a whopping 1,446 pounds. This gigantic gourd was weighed in October 2004 at a pumpkin festival in Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada. The record for the fastest pumpkin carver in the world is Jerry Ayers of Baltimore, Ohio. He carved a pumpkin in just 37 seconds! The very first jack o' lantern was made out of hollowed out turnips. Ringing a bell scares evil spirits away. If you see a spider on this night, it could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you. To meet a witch, put your clothes on inside out and walk backwards on Halloween night. Top Tips for Halloween If your pumpkin lanternshrivels up, you can restore it by soaking it overnight in water to re hydrateit.

HALLOWEEN One story about Jack, an Irishman, who was not allowed into Heaven because he was stingy with his money. So he was sent to hell. But down there he played tricks on the Devil (Satan), so he was kicked out of Hell and made to walk the earth forever carrying a lantern. Well, Irish children made Jack's lanterns on October 31st from a large potato or turnip, hollowed out with the sides having holes and lit by little candles inside. And Irish children would carry them as they went from house to house begging for food for the village Halloween festival that honored the Druid god Muck Olla. The Irish name for these lanterns was "Jack with the lantern" or "Jack of the lantern," abbreviated as " Jack-o'-lantern" and now spelled "jack-o-lantern." The traditional Halloween you can read about in most books was just children's fun night. Halloween celebrations would start in October in every elementary school. Children would make Halloween decorations, all kinds of orange-paper jack-o-lanterns. And from black paper you'd cut "scary" designs ---an evil witch with a pointed hat riding through the sky on a broomstick, maybe with black bats flying across the moon, and that meant bad luck. And of course black cats for more bad luck. Sometimes a black cat would ride away into the sky on the back of the witch's broom. And on Halloween night we'd dress up in Mom or Dad's old shoes and clothes, put on a mask, and be ready to go outside. The little kids (children younger than we were) had to go with their mothers, but we older ones went together to neighbors' houses, ringing their doorbell and yelling, "Trick or treat!" meaning, "Give us a treat (something to eat) or we'll play a trick on you!" The people inside were supposed to come to the door and comment on our costumes. Oh! here's a ghost. Oh, there's a witch. Oh, here's an old lady. Sometimes they would play along with us and pretend to be scared by some ghost or witch. But they would always have some candy and maybe an apple to put in our "trick or treat bags." But what if no one come to the door, or if someone chased us away? Then we'd play a trick on them, usually taking a piece of soap and make marks on their windows. .And afterwards we would go home and count who got the most candy. One popular teen-agers' Halloween trick was to unroll a roll of toilet paper and throw it high into a tree again and again until the tree was all wrapped in the white paper. The paper would often stay in the tree for weeks until a heavy snow or rain washed it off. No real harm done, but it made a big mess of both the tree and the yard under it. One kind of Halloween mischief.

In addition, you want to know more about some? Here we briefly outline the origins and customs of Halloween. First, the origin of Halloween: With regard to the origin of Halloween, the largest version of the legend that it was before the birth of Christ from the ancient Western European countries, mainly including Ireland, Scotland and Wales. This is a few Western Europeans of the ancient people called the Druids. This is why we are now Halloween, but are also left witch's brooms, black cats, spells and other traces. 2, Halloween production of the word: Many people are in a Halloween celebration party, which in turn is called "All Hallow E'en", "The Eve of All Hallows", "Hallow e'en", or "The eve of All Saintas'Day". Later, this custom has continued down, it becomes a laugh at the kids can not be generous house joke. As for the pumpkin lights at least two different ways. Man hollowing out a pumpkin is also engraved with a face point, the ghost of the candle used to disperse; Another point is the ghost of the candle, trying to cheat the people taken in and follow the ghost to go, so people on the surface of the pumpkin engraved with a mockery of the face to make fun of the ghost: Humph! Of course, costumes and props industry, business people are more to do in the article. Halloween is not school holidays. Sometimes the school come forward to organize parties, and sometimes unwilling students will host their own mini-show; while friends and family of human inter-Ji Heka wish Happy Halloween has become popular among the custom every year in October. Halloween, or Hallowe’en, is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses", carving Jack-o'-lanterns, reading scary stories and watching horror movies. Irish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century. Halloween is celebrated in several countries of the Western world, most commonly in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Japan, New Zealand, and occasionally in parts of Australia. In Sweden the All Saints' official holiday takes place on the first Saturday of November.
