hall monitor、prefect、monitor、class monitor和class representative都可以对应汉语的班长；而head of school、head perfect、head boy/girl、senior prefect、head steward、student union president和head captain则高于班长，类似学生会主席的概念。Hall monitor是美国中学（junior and middle schools）里的学生志愿者（student volunteer），负责维持走廊（corridor）的秩序（order），可能是选出来的（chosen/elected），也可能是轮流当的（on a rota）。职责包括检查上课时间（lesson time）教室外学生的外出许可（hall pass）、维持走廊里学生的秩序、确保学生按时上课、课间休息（recess）时负责看门（这是他们叫door monitor）等。Hall monitor的身份有些类似社会上的警官或保安，常被流行文化如影视小说等所采用。在NBC转播北京奥运会时，林浩被介绍为hall monitor。他是地震灾区小学里的班长。Prefect是英国/英联邦国家说法，也叫安全巡视员（safety patrol）。一般是五年级或七年级以上学生，负责教室外，以前甚至还负责体罚（corporal punishment）；一般由学生组织（student body/student government）任命或选举，其上级叫head of school【在加拿大这个词表示私立学校校（headteacher/headmaster/headmistress）】或head prefect，口语叫senior prefect、head boy或head girl。Head boy/girl在加拿大某些地区是学习最好的毕业班学生，类似美国的valedictorian，而不是班长之类的意思；他们用Head steward表示head of school。如果是任命的（appointed）或者是public school的，那么也叫school captain；在美国则叫student body president；一般是最高年级的学生担任，代表学校和学生。Head boy或head girl代表学校参加活动，往往需要公开演讲。Head prefect和school captain可以同时存在，前者地位高。在印度、巴基斯坦、斯里兰卡、新加坡和马来西亚，prefect是小学和中学（primary and secondary schools）的student leader。这个词也可以指政府、教会、军队的官员；在瑞典是大学一个系的领导。有的国家还有class representative，身份类似。马耳他有door monitor、class monitor和hall monitor的分工。印度经常只用monitor一个词，职责主要是协助老师。

课代表不是班干部，大学班干部指的是班长和各类委员，如体育委员，纪律委员，学习委员等。
