say可用作及物动词，也可用作不及物动词。用作及物动词时，后可接名词、代词、动词不定式、带疑问词的不定式或that/wh-从句作宾语。也可引出直接引语。可用于被动结构。有时还可用一般现在时表过去。
say引出直接引语时，如果主句是放在引语之前，主句中的主语不管是名词或是代词，主谓均不倒装；如果主句是放在引语之后或是插在引语之中，主语是代词时，主谓也不倒装，主语是名词时，主谓常可倒装。
“It is/was said that...”结构的意思是“据说”。
say后有时可跟替代词so或not。

1.作为疑问代词，引导特殊疑问句，在句中作主语、宾语、表语。如：

2. 作形容词用，修饰名词，表示“什么的”，“哪个的”。如：

4.引导感叹句，修饰名词，如果所修饰的名词是单数可数名词，则在名词前加a或an。如：

注意与how的区别，所修饰的词是形容词或副词，则用how来引导。试比较：
How beautiful she is！ 她长得多漂亮啊！
