Twenty-seven bodies, all unidentified, were among thelatest to be recovered under debris in typhoon-stricken coastal areas includingthe hardest hit city of Tacloban, said Maj. Reynaldo Balido, the spokesman forthe National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. The overnight tallypushed the overall death toll to 6,009 while 1,779 others remain unaccountedfor, the government agency said, making the typhoon the deadliest naturaldisaster on record to hit the Philippines.Balido said that 20 to30 bodies were still being found every day. Identifying cadavers in theadvanced stage of decomposition and matching them with the missing is adifficult process and the reason why the number of the missing remainsunchanged, he said. The homes of more than16 million people also were either flattened or damaged by the typhoon, andofficials said rebuilding will take at least three years.Social WelfareSecretary Corazon Soliman said that temporary bunkhouses and emergency shelterswere being constructed and residents given cash in exchange for work, includingrepacking and hauling relief goods."We will providematerials to rebuild their houses, however, we stressed to the localgovernments that new shelters have to be built 40 meters away from theshoreline on high tide," she said.P.S.

There's no doubting Kilauea's beauty. Its frequent lava flows running down to the ocean's edge are a big attraction. But scientists say their latest research indicates that explosive eruptions of ash and rock have been far more common in the past than the gentle, photogenic outflows seen today. By studying the charred remains of plants caught up in historic blasts, they've established that Kilauea's more violent mode has dominated the last 2,500 years. A classic example was 1790, when the volcano hurled rock and ash at island inhabitants, killing many hundreds of people. The event remains the most lethal known eruption in America. Scientists say it's not possible to predict if this violent behaviour will return but should it come back, large parts of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park would be off-limits for a long time. Scientists say there should be ample warning of a change in behaviour so it's not something local people should worry about just now.

Chile hit by 6.2-magnitude quake(智利地震报道) A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck northern Chile on Sunday morning, the U.S.Geological Survey said. The quake struck at about 9:30 a.m.local time in the Tarapaca region about 60 kilometres from the port city of Arica, the agency said. Some people ran out of homes and churches into the streets when they felt the shaking, but there were no reports of injuries,Chile's national emergency agency said. Some adobe homes were damaged in the northern villages of Putre and Belen, and there were rock slides on a road that connects Chile with Bolivia, the agency later said. The latest quake comes a little more than a year after Chile was rocked by one of the largest tremors ever recorded — an 8.8-magnitude tremor on Feb.27,2010,that killed at least 521 people and caused massive damage in the disaster-prone Andean nation. Chile faces constant danger from earthquakes because of its location on the so-called "ring of fire," where the edges of the giant plate beneath the Pacific Ocean form a particularly intense ring of tectonic activity.
