《仲夏夜之梦》。

话剧是一种移植到中国的外来戏剧形式，中国话剧由于社会变革需求应运而生。话剧原本是西方舶来品，英语名为Drama，最初中文译名曾用过新剧、文明戏等名称。

1920年，以上海新舞台上演萧伯纳名剧《华伦夫人之职业》和民众戏剧社的成立为标记，话剧正式走上中国舞台。在整个20世纪20年代，“戏剧”这个称谓基本等同于后来的“话剧”。

1928年，导演洪深提议将其定名为话剧，以统一有关这个新的艺术形式的多种不同称谓，并使其区别于中国传统戏曲，以独立的艺术品格和崭新姿态屹立于中国艺坛。

话剧是以对话和动作为主要表现手段的戏剧，欧洲各国通称戏剧。中国早期话剧产生于1907年，当时称“新剧”或“文明戏”，但新剧于辛亥革命之后逐渐衰落。

五四运动后，欧洲戏剧传入中国，中国现代话剧兴起，当时称“爱美剧”、“白话剧”或“真新剧”，1928年由戏剧家洪深提议定名“话剧”。著名话剧有《威尼斯商人》等。
