1984年，英国歌手菲尔·科林斯和鲍勃·格尔多夫召集了十余位歌手录制了歌曲《Do they know it's Christmas》，为非洲饥民筹集了许多善款 。

英国歌坛的此项义举打动了美国歌手哈里·贝拉方特，他认为美国人也不能落后，这一想法得到了许多人的支持。当时，埃塞俄比亚和苏丹的食物短缺、人民挨饿的消息同时也震惊了迈克尔· 杰克逊和莱昂内尔·里奇，两人认为自己该做点什么。
