美国出版的冠有韦氏字样的一批英语词典的统称。主要指梅里厄姆英语词典系列。其中最有名的是《韦氏国际英语词典》，它经历了一个不断修订的过程。1828年美国词典编纂家N·韦伯斯特自行出版《美国英语词典》二册，该书成为继英国约翰逊《英语词典》之后的经典辞书。韦氏死后，开印刷所的兄弟二人G·梅里厄姆和C·梅里厄姆买了韦家的版权，以梅里厄姆·韦伯斯特公司的名义出版梅里厄姆韦氏词典。1847年修订第一版印出，合订成一巨册，并配上插图。1890年改书名为《韦氏国际英语词典》（意即通用于英语国家）。1909年又改称《韦氏新国际英语词典》，并于1934年出了第二版。1961年出版《韦氏第三版新国际英语大词典》。 《韦氏第三版新国际英语大词典》是美国结构主义语言学的硕果。它的篇幅极大，收词45万条，是最大型的单卷本英语词典。该书抱着对语言作客观的记录和描写的宗旨，有闻必录，收罗了大量的俗语(包括许多不雅的字眼)。在一段时间里这种编辑方针受到人们尖锐的批评；一二十年后争论才平息下来。 梅里厄姆韦氏词典已形成一个系列，除了上述巨著，还有《韦氏大学词典》、《韦氏同义词词典》、《韦氏中学词典》(不止一种)，以及一些专门词典。其中《韦氏大学词典》是一本质量教高的权威中型词典，常为一般美国家庭购置。 Merriam-Webster'S Collegiate Dictionary [11th]《梅里厄姆·韦伯斯特大学辞典》简称《韦氏大学词典》 观点之一：主要问题在于循环解释和用大词释小词，俺觉得M-W.C.D 是给考GRE的人准备的；M-W.C.D 这个问题是很致命的，从词典编撰之初就强调--不能大词解释小词；M-W.C.D 另一大缺点就是例句太少。 观点之二：M-W.C.D 释义是从 Marriam-Webster International Dictionary [3rd] 精选而来，生词解释生词的问题带来的好处也很大的--加强了解释的精确性, 有时回头去查几个释义中的生词也是值得的--这些生词常让你感到确应知道，若TOEFL词汇较熟，用M-W.C.D 可能是不错选择。 GRE分数很高的人，在实际使用英语交流时大都会有问题。他们可以从《梅里厄姆-韦伯斯特大学辞典》认识很多词，在阅读中一看就明白，可对用法却不甚了了，这样写作能力、口语表达就会成问题。 我们学英语并不是为了应试，在词典中查一个词，除非是动植物名称等没什么好说的名词，一般最好应该知道其用法是怎样的，和哪些词最经常搭配；中国人学外语单词，尤如拼图。你不但要知道每一个部分是怎样的，还要知道这一部分和其他部分是如何搭配的，这样才能把图拼对。 作为第二语言的学习者还是应该多看学习词典。学习者词典是写给学英语的外国人看的，也就是我们看的，其良苦用心我们不好辜负；最为常见的学习词典为以下两种。 Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English [4th]（朗文当代英语词典） Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary [7th] （牛津高阶学习词典） OALD7----释义用词3000（例句用词 > 4500 ），使用起点--约为大学生； LDOCE4---释义用词2000（例句用词 > 3500 ），使用起点--约为高中生。 其实，词典编到这份上谁（指大公司的产品）也不会比谁好多，谁也不会比谁差多少；各具特色是肯定的，不过个人以为LDOCE词典比OALD水准更高一点，毕竟它只用两千个词就把大千世界解释的如此清楚明白! 要知道以简御繁是何等的困难，不信的话自己去试试看! 作为学习用，LDOCE的更好些，在体会外国人学英语方面更好些，OALD给人的感觉现在是跟着LDOCE路子走。 2004年版的《朗文高级英语词典》（外研社）（定价99元）、牛津第六版的双解版（定价99元）、英汉双解《柯林斯COBUILD英语大词典》（上海译文版）、外教版英汉双解《剑桥国际英语词典》、英汉双解《简明牛津英语词典》等，都是很好的英语辞书。 柯林斯COBUILD高阶英语词典》 这本有的，我就有! 补充: 2004年版的《朗文高级英语词典》（外研社）（定价99元）、牛津第六版的双解版（定价99元）、英汉双解《柯林斯COBUILD英语大词典》（上海译文版）、外教版英汉双解《剑桥国际英语词典》、英汉双解《简明牛津英语词典》等，都是很好的英语辞书。
