Mother's day

Mother's day is a day to thank your mother. The festival first appeared in ancient Greece; Modern mother's day originated in the United States on the second Sunday of may. Mothers often receive gifts on this day, and carnations are regarded as flowers for their mothers, while the Chinese mother flower is the day lily flower, also known as the nepenthes.

Ancient mother's day originated in Greece, and the ancient greeks paid tribute to Hera, the mother of the gods in Greek mythology. In the middle of the 17th century, mother's day spread to England, and the British celebrated the fourth Sunday of lent as mother's day. On this day, young people will return home and bring small gifts to their mothers.

Mother's day in the modern sense originated in the United States, led by Anna jarvis. She never married and had no children. On May 9, 1906, Anna jarvis's mother died tragically. On the anniversary of the death of her mother the following year, jarvis organized the activities of her mother and encouraged others to express their gratitude to their mothers in a similar way. Jarvis wrote to Andrews methodist church in grafton, West Virginia, requesting a special memorial service for her mother. Her mother served Sunday school in the church for more than 20 years. In 1908, the church declared the death of jarvis's mother -- the second Sunday in May as mother's day. Jarvis also organized a mother's day committee to begin mass campaigns to make mother's day a legal holiday. Her appeal received a warm response. On May 10, 1913, the United States senate and the house of representatives passed a resolution, which was signed by President Wilson and decided to celebrate mother's day on the second Sunday of may every year. The move was followed by countries around the world, and by 1948, 43 countries had set up mother's day. The United States government also stipulates that on mother's day, every family should fly the national flag to show their respect for their mothers.

Mother's flower -- carnation.

In May 1934, the United States issued the first mother's day commemorative stamps, with a kindly mother on the stamp, with her hands on her knees, looking at the bright, beautiful carnations in the vase in front of her. With the spread of stamps, in the minds of many people, mother's day was associated with carnations, and carnations became a symbol of maternal love and respected by people. People think of their mother, honor their mother's feelings, on the carnation, carnation also became a gift of the mother indispensable gifts.

Chinese mother lily.

Our country also has a kind of mother flower, it is day lily flower.

Daylily, in our country has always had "mother flower" beautiful name. As far away as "the book of songs and the wind", "how can you get the grass, the back of the tree?" The grass is the day lily, and the ancients called it nepenthes. The back is the meaning of the north, referring to the north house where the mother lives. Where did I get the day lily, before my mother's day, to make my mother happy? The house where the mother lives is also called the day lily, which is used as a substitute for the mother's love, such as the children's poem of mengjiao: "the day lily is the first class, and the wandering son is the world. There is no day lily in front of the mother. The poem of ye mengde: "the white hair daylily, the child more altogether." History of Mother's DayMother's Day is a time of commemoration and celebration for Mom. It is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings, and crayon scribbled "I Love You"s. The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter), "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England. During this time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch. As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration . People began honoring their mothers as well as the church. In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass ever year. In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May. While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.
