美式足球跟英式足球
早在中世纪的时候，英格兰就有一种名为Soccer的运动，它使用脚来踢球，但是严格地说，Soccer不是现代运动中的足球。这种运动在19世纪初受到贵族学校例如Eton和Rugby的欢迎，于是人们希望将次运动重新设计并规范一下。
1863年10月的某个周一，英国一些学校成立了Association Football，重新规范了这种运动，例如犯规等规则。
1871年，另一帮俱乐部又再次设计了此运动，这一次更贴近Rugby橄榄球运动，于是叫做Rugby Football。
至此，足球在当时的英格兰有两种派别，一种是Association Football，一种是Rugby Football，分别简称为Soccer、Rugger，实际上有所不同，分别就是现代的足球和橄榄球。
到了20世纪，Soccer这个词被传入美国，而在当时，美国人民也有了自己的Football运动(其实就是现代美国的橄榄球)，于是为了区别，美国人民将足球称为Soccer，保留他们自己的橄榄球叫做Football。
为了支持自己的推论，Szymanski找到了1905年的《纽约时报》，其中有一篇文章就描述了这种Association Football足球运动，并称之为Socker。
Szymanski还统计了二十世纪初美国和英国媒体对足球运动所使用的词汇，结果发现，Soccer是20世纪前半世纪英国所用的词汇，不过直到第二次世界大战之后，才被广泛的使用。
在二战之后的20年里，Football和Soccer Football都在被交替使用着，直到英国人民突然开始排斥美国文化(二战后某个时期)。由于美国人用Soccer，英国就不太喜欢用了，Soccer便在英国用得越来越少，在美国用得越来越多，英国便使用Football来代替Soccer Football描述这种运动。
