第29届夏季奥运会的火炬接力(torch relay)将于明年3月底开始。这次火炬接力将是历届奥运会规模最大的一次，途经五大洲，历时130天(第一届柏林现代奥运会火炬接力历时13天，上届雅典奥运会为78天)。我国火炬手(torchbearer)的选拔工作采取公开选拔(open selection)和组织推荐(recommendation by organizations)相结合的办法，现已进入倒计时(countdown)，各地已将火炬手(共11534名)和护跑手(escort，有的翻译网站把“火炬护跑手”逐字译为torch protects runs the hand，真叫人哭笑不得)、候选人(candidate)的名单上报到北京奥组委。这次火炬接力的主题(theme)是：“使体育为人的和谐发展服务，以促进维护个人尊严的和平社会的发展。”(Placing sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.)口号是：“点燃激情，传递梦想。”(Light the passion; share the dream.)北京奥运会的火炬设计独特，称为“火凤凰”(fire phoenix)，其创意灵感来自中国传统的纸卷轴(paper scroll)。火炬上的图案是“祥云”(luck cloud，其意思是“象征吉利的云”，如果用形容词lucky cloud，意思会变成“吉利的云”，只表示云本身是吉利的，失去了象征意义。顺便提一下，英语的torch一词来自拉丁文的torquere，原来意思是twist，因为最早的torch是用稻草或类似的材料扭卷起来，再弄上燃料而成的，现在则多用电池为能源。请大家想一想，“圣火”为什么就是Olympic flame，不能译为 sacred / holy fire?
