南瓜灯英文由来

杰克南瓜灯也就是南瓜灯，是从爱尔兰开始。传说爱尔兰有一个名叫 Stingy Jack 的男子，有一天邀请恶魔喝酒，因为喝完后没钱付帐，他就说服恶魔变成六便士来付酒钱，可是Jack并没有拿它来付钱，反而用一条银纸把恶魔镇住，让它出不来。后来恶魔答应Jack一整年都不吓他，杰克才放魔鬼出来。第二年的万圣节恶魔又出现了，它又答应不会来骚扰Jack一年，可是一年还没过完，Jack就去世了。死后，天堂不收他，因为他非常吝啬；地狱也不留他，因为他戏弄恶魔。无处可归的他，最后只好不停的走着，并提着白萝卜，里面放着魔鬼给他的炭火来照亮路面，找一个地方来休息。后来爱尔兰人就用马铃薯或是大头菜做成灯笼，在1840年代随着新移民来到美洲大陆，他们发现比白萝卜更好的材料，那就是南瓜；因此现在所看到的杰克灯通常是南瓜做的了。另一个传说爱尔兰的民间传说。据说有一个名叫 Stingy Jack 的酒鬼，曾经设计将撒但骗上树，并在树干上刻了一个十字架，让撒但不敢下来，结果魔鬼和他达成协议，保证从此不再前来骚扰，才得以脱身。Jack 在死后，天堂和地狱都拒绝他进入。魔鬼给了他一小块灰烬，让他寻找一个适当的地方来休息，他便将这小块灰烬放在一个打了许多洞的白罗卜当中，好让它烧久一点。 后来苏格兰人便模仿他，挖空大头菜，放入蜡烛。爱尔兰人则是用马铃薯或是大头菜；英格兰则用甜菜。后来移民到了美国发现一个更好用的材料─南瓜。因此现在的杰克灯大都用南瓜做了。
