让步(concession)主要是指接下来提及的信息是一种期待之外的结果(unexpected result)，让步从句则是指“从句中的信息固然是真的，但主句中的信息更加重要。“根据让步从句中所给的信息，主句中提到的事是非常令人惊讶和意外的。转折(contrast)则是指前后信息是直接相反的(direct opposition)，前后两个句子的位置是可以互换的，因为它们之间是并列关系。如：I am short, but my brother is tall. 和 My brother is tall, but I am short. 这两个句子都是正确的。

其实让步和转折都有一种“对比”的含义，英语称之为"contrast"。而让步和转折就是在"contrast"下的两个子分类。

1. 连接副词和词组(transition words and phrases)：however；nevertheless；nonetheless；still。

例句：Millions of people go on diets ever year; however/nevertheless/nonetheless/still, very few succeed in losing weight。

2. 从属连词(subordinatiors)：although；even though；though。

这三个词意思几乎一样，though相对没那么正式，even though语气稍强烈于although。

例句：Although/Even though/Though most dieters initially lose a few pounds, most gain them back again within a few weeks。

注：一些作者会遵循正式的逗号规则——只有当让步从句出现在主句之前，才使用逗号，但另一些作者无论主句和从句的顺序是什么，都会在它们之间使用逗号。

3. 其他词组：despite/in spite of + n。

例句：Despite/In spite of 10 years of dieting, I am still fat。

让步状语从句是状语从句中的一种，其本身也是状语从句。一般翻译为“尽管……”或“即使……”，就是我们日常生活中用的“退一步说……”的感觉。目录使用的连词引导让步状语从句的连词主要有以下这些:though,although,while,as;evenif,eventhough;whether...or...;nomatter+疑问词，疑问词-ever，regardlessof+名词/名词短语/名词从句，despite，inspiteof。切记although，though不可与but连用，但可以与yet连用。
